WebMastered by Marc Spicer Install a programmable thermostat.   Set your programmable thermostat to  lower the temperature of your home 5 degrees while you are away.  Make sure you do not set it more than five degrees colder than what you want it to be when you return or you will use too much fuel for recovery.   Close registers in rooms that are not used.  Never cover or close a cold air return!   The largest heat loss in your house is your windows.  If you are going to be doing any home improvement, make sure new windows are Low-E (low energy) construction.  Insulate, insulate, insulate!  Any insulation you could add to your home will help.  In some cases, I have recommend that some customers spend their money on insulation rather than updating equipment that is less than 25 years old.   Have your heating system cleaned every year.  Collins Oil can test your burner’s efficiency and will make sure your system is burning efficiently.    Change (or clean) your air filters several times a year.   Check caulking around door and windows at least once a year.  Be  sure to replace shrunken or dried out material.   If you have a fireplace, makes sure to keep you flue damper tightly closed when not in use.   Turn down the hot water temperature to the lowest comfortable setting.
